The launched AI model can translate as well as transcribe more than 100 languages. SeamlessM4T works both in written and spoken form. SeamlessM4T can effectively identify the spoken languages so the user doesn’t need a separate language identification tool. This feature sets SeamlessM4T apart from other traditional translators. This innovation sets the foundations of "Massively Multilingual Speech". Unlike its competitors, Meta is planning to launch its AI translator model under open source license which makes it a valuable resource for developers and researchers worldwide. This open approach is expected to stand SeamlessM4T from its competitors shortly. How Seamless M4T was Created Creating SeamlessM4T was a diligent journey for Meta. In the making process of SeamlessM4T, Meta carefully collected the massive amount of text and spoken content publically available on the internet. They called this collection "SeamlessAlign”. This open-source treasure of text and spoken content served as the bedrock for the training of the SeamlessM4T AI model. Researchers aligned hours of spoken content with corresponding written text, enabling SeamlessM4T to function proficiently. The AI model was then able to effectively perform tasks like transcribing spoken words into text, translating text, generating speech from written text, and translating words between different languages. Potential Challenges for the Meta Regardless of its significant leap in AI translation, seamlessM4T comes with a lot of challenges. Like many AI-driven models, it too, struggles with biases. Some translation models seem to lean toward masculine forms when translating neutral terms due to biases in the training data. Meta acknowledges this issue and is actively working to address it. Additionally, the model faces challenges with undesirable content. While it is aimed at minimizing toxic language, there are situations where it can inadvertently generate offensive or harmful translations. These sensitive matters can be social status, cultural nuances, sexual orientation, and religion. To address the issue, Meta has offered a toxicity filter for public demos.
