This isnt possible in the ‘original’ GTalk… You have to get GTalk – Labs Edition (click here for direct download link to the exe)… here are some screenshots…
PS: It takes a tad bit longer to sign-in but its worth-it =)

well good addition for those who use the Gtalk Application … i use gtalk only in the gmail when logged in so it had this feature already , never noticed it 😛
