Millions of Hacked Instagram Account Details for Sale

“We care deeply about the safety and security of the Instagram community, so we want to let you know that we recently discovered a bug on Instagram that could be used to access some people’s email address and phone number even if they were not public.” said Mike Krieger, chief technical officer and Instagram co-founder,in his blog post.

Instagram Hack – Verified & Non Verified Users

Instagram first said that attack was limited to verified account holders only but later they revealed that non verified accounts were affected as well.The popular social media app owned by Facebook is unable to determine which specified accounts were targeted but they said the attack has “low percentage”. However Dark Net database Doxagram claims to have credentials for up to 6 million accounts including those of more than 500 celebrities.Hackers filled Doxagram with information(phone numbers and email addresses) of 1000 accounts,and made these available for sale,50 of which are Instagram’s most followed accounts.

Athletes: David Beckham,Ronaldinho,Floyd Mayweather, Zinedine Zidane, Neymar.

Also the personal details tied to accounts operated by numerous brands and popular organisation like Adidas,NASA,Chanel and Nike are available for sale.

How Instagram Hack was performed

The bug found in “Password reset” was exploited that allowed hackers to break into contact details of users,however password and other insta activity were not exposed.
Although Instagram has fixed the bug now but they have warned users to be more cautious and vigilant in case they observe any suspicious activity such as unrecognized incoming calls, texts or emails.
The company sent an alert to high profile verified accounts urging them to take steps like activate Two factor authentication and pick a unique password to stay secured.
